This Sunday is Mother’s Day!
((hint)) ((hint)) if you haven’t bought your mother’s day card yet.
Many of our moms, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends that are moms rely on transit every day. So I thought, what a better way to celebrate transit this #TransitThursday than to celebrate the many Moms in Transit!
Some moms in transit even blog about their experiences, like Carla Saulter AKA @SeattleBusChick. If you don’t follow her tweets or her blog http://www.buschick.com/blog/, I highly recommend checking her out! Streetfilms has even featured her before: http://www.streetfilms.org/meet-seattles-bus-chick/
I LOVE that more and more moms are choosing transit over driving giant minivans or SUVs as a viable way to cart the kids around, run errands and to travel to work.
There’s even a Mom in Portland who has ditched her car and uses her bike to cart around her SIX kids!!! http://www.today.com/moms/biker-mama-mother-six-ditches-suv-super-sized-bike-998748 Now that’s awesome —> http://bikeportland.org/2012/06/28/with-six-kids-and-no-car-this-mom-does-it-all-by-bike-73731
So let’s celebrate the moms who ride transit! Share blogs and twitter handles or pics of moms who ride transit; tell their story! Share about your moms, sisters, aunts, cousins, or even your friends that are moms who rely on transit. How do they do it? Why do they do it?
Don’t have a story about a mom who rides transit? That’s OK! Share your story of where you plan to take your favorite mom this weekend using transit? Where are you going? What route will you take?
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I hope you are well celebrated on this glorious #TransitThursday! :-)

It’s #TransitThursday and I’m headed out of town again! This time I’m in transit to Atlanta via @megabus to see @CCTgirl for the @YPTAtlanta chapter launch party.
Transit is a great way to travel, not only within your own city, but also between cities. Today, @megabus is taking me to Atlanta. So, while I sit back, relax, and leave the driving to someone else, I get to use this time to write this blog to you! I have free wifi, outlets, reclining seats, my laptop, iPhone, morning coffee and even a bagel. If I want to take a nap, I can. If I want to work, I can. If I want to tweet about transit, I can! All because I’m not driving!
$3 roundtrip! I literally spent more on my breakfast at Dunkin Donuts! (Not much more, but still!)
I don’t have to waste my money on $4 / gallon gas to fill up a car. Transit keeps money in my pocket and the option to spend on something other than gas!
Not to mention, I’m reducing my vehicle miles traveled and ultimately my carbon footprint! Last Saturday was Earth Day. Earth day is a day for us to take a moment to be mindful of the great gift of this little planet that we like to call home.
Instead of driving, me and about 60 other people are choosing transit as our mode of travel to Atlanta. That’s 60 less cars on the road. 60 less people driving 243.8 miles each; that’s 14,384.2 vehicle miles saved — and that’s just one way!
We’re also traveling on a fuel efficient Vanhool bus that is operating on Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) with a diesel particulate filter. That means less emissions released into the atmosphere from the combustion of the fuel used to power this trip.
For me, transit is a no brainer…It’s a conscious decision that I choose to ride transit.I choose transit because I believe in doing my part to leave this planet the way it was when I arrived here 30 years ago; and hopefully to improve it a little bit too!
I know we’ve talked about this topic before, but I really can’t get enough of it! So, whether it’s a conscious decision or it’s merely a convenience, why do you ride transit?
Tell us why you ride transit, but don’t forget to use the hashtag #TransitThursday!
