#ClearTheAir

Today was the kickoff for the Clear The Air Campaign. The Clear The Air Campaign is when we commit to changing our travel patterns to help clear the air of harmful pollutants from cars. These pollutants, when combined with sunlight and heat, contribute to the creation of ground-level ozone (that’s the “bad kind of ozone”).

“Ground-level ozone does not come from tailpipes and smokestacks. Instead, it is a “secondary pollutant” — a byproduct of two other air pollutants, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs or hydrocarbons). These pollutants, in turn, come from our vehicle emissions, industrial and utility plants and other sources.

Sunlight and warm temperatures drive NOx and VOCs to react to form ozone. That is why we see more ozone in the summer, especially in the afternoons and early evenings. The highest ozone levels usually occur from 2 to 7 p.m., primarily in the warmer weather months.  However, ozone can form at other times when the weather is unseasonably warm.

Exposure to air pollution affects every breath you take, your heart and your immune system. Ground-level ozone and particle pollution impact our health, our environment and our local economy.” Source: Clear the Air Campaign, Georgia.

The Clear the Air Campaign is a national program to encourage you to RIDE TRANSIT, bicycle, walk, telework/participate in a flexible/compressed work week schedule (when available), vanpool or carpool, carshare, trip chain, and/or e-travel on ozone action days; ozone action days are code orange, red or purple days.

But how do you know when it’s an ozone action day? Well, aside from your daily weather forecasts available on Radio, TV or Internet Radio/TV, you can also check the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources North Carolina Air Quality Forecast Center.
